Appraisal OCPP
The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) is a freely available open standard that enables component vendors and network operators to “mix and match” interoperable hardware and software. It was first defined and deployed, as version 1.2 in 2010, and is a proven way to optimize the cost and risk of networked infrastructure investments. New versions of OCPP are collaboratively defined within an open industry alliance to ensure that the protocol continues to meet evolving market requirements. Today charging network operators and service providers in more than 50 countries rely on OCPP to manage more than 10,000 charging stations. We asked some of them why they are involved in OCPP/OCA. These are some of their answers:
“Eaton's commitment to providing customers flexible, innovative solutions has made it a global leader in electrical systems. This is a commitment we share with the Open Charge Alliance and what motivated us to become a member. Leveraging the industry's de facto open standard protocol, our customers are able to mix and match their choice of chargers while ensuring they have a robust platform to control and manage their sites."
John Wirtz, Business Unit Manager - Electrical Transportation Infrastructure, Eaton Corporation
“Simply put, OCPP has emerged as the best solution for EVSE management. Since 2011, we have relied on OCPP for the high level of interoperability it ensures between European networks and now all DBT-CEV Charging Points are OCPP compliant. Acting as a catalyst for E-mobility development across Europe, OCPP promises to become the defacto global standard with massive adoption by all players.”
Vienney Devienne, Sales Director, DBT
“As operator of one of the largest charge station networks in The Netherlands, and currently expanding the Belgium and Germany, we stand behind OCPP and the Open Charge Alliance’s goal to ensure accessible, flexible EV networks.”
Olger Warnier, Architect, TheNewMotion
“The true strength of OCPP in this developing market is proven by the simple fact that it is the only undisputed choice across (almost) all the initiatives out there. OCPP is doing for electric charging what wikipedia did for information sharing. It is a joint effort by those that actually make the implementations and know what is required, completely free and open.”
Patrick Rademakers, Director Energy & Technology, IHomer
“With EV systems running across Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, we depend on OCPP to maintain the flexibility we need to ensure open access.”
Jos Siemons, Managing Consultant Smart Energy, Partner, CGI
"After 20 years of providing automation systems, we embraced the early OCPP protocol for our EV charging solutions, and we wouldn't have it any other way!"
Christophe Giaume, CEO of GIR
“As one of the leading companies in development and manufacturing of charging stations we welcome OCA and its goals. OCPP is the base of a flexible charging network, and with connections between our charging solutions and more than 12 different back office systems based on OCPP we see the operational benefits of a global alliance.”
Elbert W. Lievense, Business Development at Alfen ICU
“We consider interoperability as a key factor in the success of e-mobility. The development and widespread adoption of OCPP contributes considerably to achieving this. As the largest Belgian charging network operator, we are keen on contributing to the OCA initiative.”
Peter Buyckx, Enovates
“OCPP is the best platform there is for the essential interoperability between all users of charge infrastructure. The open structure guarantees licence and royalties free use of the protocols. It will benefit EV drivers, charge infra operators and charge infra manufacturers. Besides this it also is the best platform for integrating E-mobility into the Smart Grids.”
Andre Postma, Manager Smart Grid development, ENEXIS B.V.
"Since our utility partners all over Germany having multiple infrastructure manufacturers, OCPP helps us to lower complexity. We will strongly support the Open Charging Alliance towards having one open standard,”
Dr. Mark Walcher, CEO of smartlab
